In order to remain accredited, the College is required to measure how well our curriculum accomplishes the goals we set for it. For Biology majors, our goals are that you will know about as much biology as Bio majors at other colleges; that you will be able to carry out and report on an independent research project; that you will understand the relevance of biology to everyday life; and that B.S. graduates will be prepared for graduate or professional study. To assess how well we meet these goals, we need your cooperation in several activities: Each Spring we ask our seniors to take a standardized exam measuring biological knowledge and comparing our scores with those of senior bio. majors from many other institutions. This is done as part of Biology 452 (Senior Colloquium). PLEASE NOTE — Your performance on this test will not affect your grades or your ability to graduate! The date for this exam will be announced well in advance, and all seniors are required to participate. To assess how well we prepare you for research, a biology professor from one of our neighbor colleges (Lynchburg, R-MWC, Hampden-Sydney) is invited to evaluate the senior oral presentations given at the end of each semester, and a second Sweet Briar biology faculty member, in addition to your research advisor, reads your final paper. None of this requires extra effort on your part.Biology candidates for the B.A. degree are asked to submit, some time before graduation, two pieces of class work that link biology to topics in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. This might include answers to essay exam questions, reports, papers, oral presentations, art work, creative writing, theater work, dance, or anything else that connects an aspect of biology with another subject. Finally, majors graduating with a B.S. are contacted by the Alumnae Office a couple of years later to survey their level of satisfaction with the preparation they received at Sweet Briar. When your turn comes, please return this questionnaire — it really helps us! |
