What
does Sweet Briar's Naturalist-in-Residence do?
Three things:
I assist Biology faculty in organizing and conducting field projects. I assist
the College in maintaining field sites for education and research. I develop, organize and run natural
history and natural resource workshops that use Sweet Briar's
campus.
Here are some of the projects I have been involved
with in 2007, 2008 and 2009
Spotted salamander
surveys with Professor Fink 2007 2008
Virginia Master
Naturalist Advanced Training Rallies at Sweet Briar in May 2008
and May 2009
Workshops
on construction temporary wetlands, with wetlands expert Tom Biebighauser. Shown
here are the participants from the fall 2007 workshop. We
are holding a second workshop in fall 2009.
Constructing
Sweet Briar's first deer exclosure, with Professors Steven and
Fink, and Ecology students
Field
trips with Field Natural History and Ecology students (here, examining
wood frog eggs at a Nelson County pond)
Studying the
distribution of red swamp crayfish in Sweet Briar's wetlands with
students from the Central Virginia Governor's School
